Clean breakfast and dirty dog

Last Monday Julie and I took Lyla out for dirty Denny's. I wasn't going to mention it lest you judge me for having multiple unshowered breakfasts out in a single weekend. Also, the food and service sucked.

As bad as it was (and I'll let you use your imagination about the myriad ways a trip to Denny's might go awry), we discovered its opposite this afternoon in the Original Pancake House.

I'm going to interrupt this story for a moment due to what I'm currently witnessing. Lyla's Auntie Jodie left her dog Cooper with us for the weekend, and he has spent roughly 92% of his waking hours humping Daisy. During the other 8% he chases Daisy and/or positions himself for a hump. I just thought you should know that even though we don't really let Lyla watch TV, it's basically been the Discovery Channel over here lately. As I type this, Cooper is enthusiastically helping himself. It's a little distracting.

So anyway: the Original Pancake House for a noon breakfast, showered for a change since Lyla was such a disagreeable mess of a child this morning that we decided to shelter the world from her until post-nap. I was glad it was a clean outing because we happened to run into Rachel there, the person who suggested a week ago that, crazy as it might seem, Lyla waking up at sunrise might have something to do with the sun.

That is real whipped cream that Lyla's mother is encouraging her to dip fruit into.

"Julie, fruit does not require extra sweetness. It is nature's candy."

Lyla proceeded to dip, lick, and discard three raspberries and a blueberry. Then she informed us she was all done.

Luckily we brought markers. Lyla prefers them to crayons because they have caps to take off, put on, take off, put on, take off, put on, and take off. They also require less scribble-effort than crayons.

The markers allowed me to peacefully devour strawberry crepes, hand-cut bacon, and English muffins; Julie meanwhile made her way through pigs in a blanket and hash browns.

Then, for no particular reason, Lyla offered to inspect my teeth.

And then it was time to leave.
