De-gunked and scotched--plus Oscar predictions!

Lyla woke up with a second gunky eye but with a de-gunked first eye. Now both eyes are gunkless because of the battery acid drops; we're totally keeping the remaining drops for if (when) Julie or I develop the gunk.

In other news, this evening I taught Lyla about scotch tape.

She was not amused.

And in still other news, these are my predictions what will get Oscar nominations tomorrow. I read far too many critics' opinions leading up to these nominations, but I try to disagree wherever it doesn't seem totally reckless. Read on if you have nothing better to do. The first pick in each category is what/who I think will ultimately win.

Best Picture - 10 films this year, and I'm certain about the first 8. Other possibilities for the last two are endless, really, and include District 9, It's Complicated, The Hangover, A Single Man, A Serious Man, The Messenger, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Crazy Heart, among others.

Up in the Air
Precious
Inglourious Basterds
The Hurt Locker
Up
An Education
Invictus
Star Trek
The Blind Side

Best Actress - Seems like the first four are locks with the fifth going to either Emily Blunt or Helen Mirren. I vote Blunt because Mirren has already won and because Blunt deserved a supporting nod a few years ago for The Devil Wears Prada.

Sandra Bullock – The Blind Side
Meryl Streep – Julie & Julia
Gabourey Sidibe – Precious
Carey Mulligan – An Education
Emily Blunt – The Young Victoria

Best Actor - I think many critics came up with this same list of five, although I think there could still be surprises if Morgan Freeman or Jeremy Renner get bumped for someone random like Brad Pitt for Inglourious Basterds or Matt Damon for The Informant.

Jeff Bridges – Crazy Heart
George Clooney – Up in the Air
Jeremy Renner – The Hurt Locker
Colin Firth – A Single Man
Morgan Freeman – Invictus

Supporting Actress - The first four seem like locks, while the fifth slot could just as easily go to Samantha Morton from The Messenger or Penelope Cruz from Nine. I pick Kruger because of the momentum Inglourious Basterds seems to be getting lately. I also think Vera Farmiga might get bumped, but probably not.

Mo’Nique – Precious
Anna Kendrick – Up in the Air
Vera Farmiga – Up in the Air
Julianne Moore – A Single Man
Diane Kruger – Inglourious Basterds

Supporting Actor - Again, I'm fairly confident about the first four and am picking Molina for the fifth because he's cool and has never been nominated. A lot of people seem to be picking Christopher Plummer from The Last Station, and they're probably right.

Christoph Waltz – Inglourious Basterds
Matt Damon – Invictus
Stanley Tucci – The Lovely Bones
Woody Harrelson – The Messenger
Alfred Molina – An Education

Director - It seems like everyone agrees that these are the five movies that would get best picture nominations if there were only five slots. I think Lee Daniels might get bumped here in favor of Clint Eastwood, but I hope not.

Kathryn Bigelow – The Hurt Locker
James Cameron – Avatar
Jason Reitman – Up in the Air
Quentin Tarantino – Inglourious Basterds
Lee Daniels - Precious
