Pretty please with profanity on top
We've been trying to get Lyla to say please. There's a sign they do at daycare that involves patting your chest whenever you would like to request something politely.
Lyla does not say please. Not yet, anyway. She whines and cries and occasionally whinnies. When she's crying about a cracker and we model for her how to calmly pat her chest, she looks at us like we've betrayed her in profound and unforgivable ways.
My mom claims that Lyla is polite because of how she toddles over to each person in a social situation. Lyla wants everyone to feel welcome, apparently. She's just being a good hostess. She is Martha Stewart minus the felony conviction.
I remind my mom that it is possible that Lyla just likes people, that in fact the actions of a 12-month-old are entirely self-serving. Also, I have serious doubts about politeness when there's a bag of yogurt bites on the counter and Lyla's below it screaming made-up swear words at us.
